Some Linguistic Arguments in Favour of MR Bar-Hillel's "Non uniqueness" Hypothesis

چکیده
I. In his "Four Lectures" (1963) Mr Bar-Hillel advanced a hypothesis of "different grammars for the same language lying peacefully side by side somewhere in our brain". In recent years the writer -quite independantly from Bar-Hillel (whose "lectures" were unknown to him)came across many arguments in favour of this "non-uniqueness" hypothesis. Stylistic considerations involved were discussed in a paper read at the Semiotic Conference in Kazimlerz (Poland) in September 1966. In the following some grammatical questions are briefly sketched (the whole being presented in the writers book "Methods of Modelling and Typology of Slavic Languages" to appear in summer 1967);; 2. There are no linguistic or loglc obstacles for producing words out of morphs or simple syntactic groups (phrases) out of words or morphs by a FS (finite state) grammar. Mr Vauquois and his colleagues have already demonstrated this fact for words in their brilliant study on the use of models in mechani~ cal translation. 3. As for simple syntactic groups, one can get some insights into their structure by interpreting states on the diagramm of the FS grammar as linguistic categories (following in this a proposal by Bar-Hillel and Shamir from a work of 1960). For this the writer considers a restricted FS grammar (the diagramm of such grammar does not contain two arrows labelled by the same non-empty word). Under this restriction the distribution of non-elimlnable empty words provides for an adequate segmenting of the group. It is

Shift of “Certainty” in Pre- and Post-Citation Arguments: The Case of Textbooks in Applied Linguistics
Writing academic texts by novice researchers requires a framework and support by learning how to cite the works of others. However, compared to the studies on other academic writings, studying citations by considering certainty markers has received little attention. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the shifts of certainty markers (hedges and boosters) in pre- and post-citation ...
متن کاملMetalinguistic Awareness and Bilingual vs. Monolingual EFL Learners: Evidence from a Diagonal Bilingual Context
This paper reports a study of 85 Iranian EFL learners in the English Language Department of Urmia University. It explores the possible differences between performance of 38 Persian monolingual and 47 Turkish-Persian bilingual EFL learners on metalinguistic tasks of ungrammatical structures and translation. The underlying hypothesis is that bilinguals in diagonal bilingual contexts experience a ...
متن کاملCross-Linguistic Transfer or Target Language Proficiency: Writing Performance of Trilinguals vs. Bilinguals in Relation to the Interdependence Hypothesis
This study explored the nature of transfer among bilingual vs. trilinguals with varying levels of competence in English and their previous languages. The hypotheses were tested in writing tasks designed for 75 high (N= 35) vs. intermediate (N=40) proficient EFL learners with Turkish, Persian, English and Persian, English linguistic backgrounds. Qualitative data were also collected through some ...
متن کاملThe Future of MT is Now and Bar - Hillel was ( almost entirely ) Right
A seer, according to one dictionary definition, is a person who can predict events or developments; someone, in other words, who can foretell the future. As far as I know, Yehoshua Bar-Hillel never actually claimed to be a seer. He was first and foremost a scientist (a logician and philosopher of science), not a prophet. But in his many writings on machine translation in the 1950's and early 60...
متن کاملNon-Linguistic Arguments for Intellectualism
Intellectualism about knowledge-how is the view that, in short, an agent’s knowing how to φ is grounded that agent’s propositional attitudes vis-à-vis φ-ing. Themost popular andwell-developed contemporary strategy for defending this position appeals, in the main, to linguistic considerations (e.g. Stanley &Williamson 2001; Stanley 2011), and consequently, the plausibility of intellectualism in ...
